Measles is one of the most contagious viral infections known to medicine. The characteristic maculopapular rash then appears, beginning on the face and hairline and spreading downward over the body over three to four days. The fever typically peaks at the time of rash onset and then gradually resolves as the rash fades.
The complications of measles are the most serious aspect of the disease and the reason why medical care is essential. Otitis media and pneumonia are the most common, occurring in approximately one in twenty cases. Measles encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain, affects approximately one in a thousand cases and can be fatal or leave permanent neurological damage. Eye complications, including keratitis and corneal scarring, are a significant cause of blindness in measles, particularly in children with vitamin A deficiency. Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, a rare but fatal progressive brain disease, can develop years after measles infection.
