A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is suddenly interrupted, either because a blood vessel is blocked by a clot, which accounts for approximately eighty-five percent of strokes and is known as an ischaemic stroke, or because a blood vessel ruptures and bleeds into the brain tissue, known as a haemorrhagic stroke.
